This is the first time I've seen a cat with a tail this short or rumpy, it looks cute…but a bit curious

I was just eating like usual but he came out of nowhere and then just sit beside me, I really have no idea where it came from (purring like an engine too)

Some people also just cut them for fun or aesthetics (because, as you said it yourself, it looks cute). But it is unethical and shouldn't be normalized. Vets who do this without any medical necessity should have their license revoked.

The vets I know won't do this. But people soon found a way to do it themselves anyway. Like, if you tie the tail very tight and leave them alone, it'll rot from having no blood circulation and fall off.

Source: I heard and saw one or two things because I often volunteer with animal health-related stuffs handled at the church. So, your own self-research might be needed if you want to be sure I didn't get anything wrong

That's a really valuable info man, some people are just sick

If it was a stray, it probably got into some sort of scuffle with other cats – they go for the tails during fights because they're easy to grab and hold onto. 😢

Fortunately, that cat in Dunkey's OP photos looks pretty healthy to me, and if he wasn't in noticeable pain, it couldn't have been that bad... maybe it'll grow back? 😖

Yeah hopefully it'll heal at least, even though it already looks pretty healthy

There's also another cat with him though, seems pretty chill (this one)

Like others have said, it's from the cat getting in some kind of scuffle or accident that ripped it off. This actually happened to one of my cats back in middle school when someone left the door open and he snuck out and got hit by a car. Luckily the little fella had nerves of steel and clawed his way back to the house, where my little brother heard him screaming. He survived and lived another 11 happy years, becoming completely attached and in love with my brother from that point onward since that's who was by his side the most as he recovered.

His tail did grow back though it looked a little short and odd. I'll see if I can't find some pics and update this post with em :)

That's such a great story! Your brother is a good man, thanks for sharing!

I occasionally cats with kind of here in the Philippines, and no they’re not mistreated or anything but it’s some kind of birth defects and it didn’t stop them to live fully heck they’re even the best vermin hunters (rats, cockroaches etc.) I’ve seen.

There's a lot in Jakarta, too. Saw them when I was living there. There's not much like that here in my town

Fun story, I saw a cat fighting a giant rat. Like, huge black rat the size of an adolescent kitten. It was so big and noisy, I can almost swear they paid tax and demanded the cat to get the fck out of their home. The cat got no tail, just tail stub. Very thin, but badass

Poor thing. I know this wasn't the case here, but I don't understand people that think tail docking is the least bit aesthetical. Tails serve very important motor and social functions for animals that have them, it would be no different from cutting off part of someone's leg or their tongues.

That's true! It's like taking your toes off. It doesn't completely prevent you from walking, but it makes it hard to balance yourself when walking/running.

When we volunteer and see dogs or cats with their tail docked, we had to ask what happened. I mean what we're doing is mostly charity, and we want to make sure the animals are in the right hands.

You'll be surprised nobody admitted it was vanity tail-docking, tho. They all said it was accident or medical. I hope nobody lied, but if at least one of them lied about it at all, it means that person also knows that it is unethical

True that, it also can shows many signs that they're trying to tell like if they're intimidated or scared (if hissing and spiked fur wasn't enough)

I really feel bad for these animals ::frown

I don't mean to sound sour or cynical, but sadly, there probably are some liars among those that told you there were never vanity reasons for docking.

Exactly!

Nah, if anyone is sour or cynical, that person is me lol. I also thought the same, but couldn't do anything but hope that I was wrong. We can't turn them away either, because the charity is mostly for the well-being of the animals, not the owners 🥲
