The first wave of modern comic movies started with Blade and the first Fox X-Men which drove sales up enough to get them back into pop culture, at least for Marvel (who I think were the most affected by the dark ages). Some of the smaller publishers also didn't have anywhere near as bad of a time as the bigger ones in the 90s also, Dark Horse and Vertigo had some great years going into the 2000s. Marvel also changed leadership in 2000 as well, seeing Quesada who had actually worked in the creative side of the industry take over from Barras who was just a suit.
