So, even being a game collector, I don’t usually go for crazy system variants. They’re typically more expensive and many aren’t worth it.
I have a couple colored systems. My GameBoy Color is yellow, and I got a matching Pichu charm for it. It looks gas. My PSP is this nice blue color, has a white strap, and I made sure the menu matches. It’s also gas. But there’s two systems I want to highlight.
The Pokéball 2DS XL. My old 3DS broke in 2017 and I finally asked my parents about it that year. I got this for Christmas that year. It’s a super sick variant that I’ve tried to keep in good shape while also using it as a daily driver. The button on the top is actually functional, you can push it. It does nothing, no secret function, but it just makes the system extra cool. The system also kinda looks like a Pokédex now, so that’s pretty rad. On the inside it’s just a red and black 2DS XL, which is the biggest problem: the 2DS XL design is kinda buns. I mean, it’s still a luxury to have, and I’m happy to have it, but it does feel flimsy on the hinge and the C-stick is absolutely depressing. I had the misfortune of finding out when I hacked mine that the C-stick is also broken on mine, making it hard to use, so that sucks. But it’s also still the 3DS, so it’s got a great library and vibe while having a sick exterior design.
The Mario Switch OLED, now, I specifically asked for this when getting my Switch. And I’m super happy I was able to work out a deal with my family on this one because this thing is pretty cool. It’s mostly just a red Switch OLED, which is fine, but the real magic is this subtle decal on the side and place with the plugs. Worthless? Possibly, but I can’t hear you over the sound of being mildly entertained. This came out in 2023.
