So far, I've had a very positive experience with Linux Mint 19 (which was new at the time of downloading on my old Windows 7 laptop), I definitely recommend it. It is debian based and getting windows programs to run via Wine was a pain because I've never done it before, but the results make it worth while. Despite hardware limitations, I was able to get my very much dated hardware to run UT99 at a solid 30-60 frames except when there were too many effects.
