There's very little that doesn't work out of the box with Proton, anything that doesn't usually works by changing to a different version of Proton and anything that just doesn't work at all is usually because of anti-cheat which only affects online games which I'm not that interested in anyway. A lot of times I find playing some games a lot easier on Linux than on Windows. I spent hours trying to get Shogo: Mobile Armor Division working on Windows to no avail. Installed it and it worked with no modification on Linux through Proton. In many ways, Linux is better for retro games than Windows.
