Hello
Nowadays, we're all more aware of neurodivergency. Let's talk about how it affects you - not necessarily in bad ways! Different is not the same as worse.

I myself am AuDHD. It sucks because I can't concentrate and get good at the games, but it does make me have a strong passion for them!

EDIT: This thread is NOT just for neurodivergents! Anyone is welcome. Like us? Want to understand us? Hate us?! We don't judge, speak your mind freely!

I'm on the spectrum myself. I find it doesn't affect my ability to play games but it does cause me to fixate on a game to the point that I can sink hours it in one sitting and not even realize it if I'm not careful. Phone alarms helps me manage this thankfully. Also, I mainly play at night so it doesn't affect my daily schedule.

I dont know if there is a word for this but sometimes i see people (usually chicks on speed) who just talk to the voices and dont even care...

like they will clearly be holding down 4 different conversations with ... ??? But they dont seem cracked out and can talk coherently to people in reality at the same time...

like, they cant be completely cray cray, right?

there is something going on with this phenomenon...

***EDIT***

I apologize, i realize my tone wasn't in line with this thread, but to clarify:

Sometimes i hear this stuff too, and I wonder what is going on with it. People will often talk out loud to voices that other people can't hear. but it seems that in certain states of mind, (or around certain tech or drugs, it becomes more prevalent). Also, it doesn't seem to be necessary to talk out loud to converse with... (?) what is it (?)

...

I've seen some unfortunate cases where girls have been diagnozed with "schizo-affective disorder" or some such nonsense, and then they get prescribed some terrible drug like depakote and subsequently quit it, and then the "problem" is exacerbated.

i wondered if anybody else has "heard" of this, or had any thoughts about it.

Finally, a topic for me.

Officially, I'm not diagnosed with anything, but I'm 99.99% percent sure I have ADHD. It severely affects my ability to do anything I don't find immediately enjoyable, as well my ability to control myself. Frankly, it's tiresome for me how ADHD is reduced to a "funny" disorder when it's anything but.

Trick question. All of us are.

But yes. I am autistic myself. It sucks for a lot of reasons: in my country there aren't many opportunities for people like us; and the others, despite how "aware" they may pretend to appear, don't really care about understanding any of my issues.

Have any of you also been told something along the lines of "Don't let [condition] define/limit you"?

The worst part of my ADHD isn't even focusing. It's how the impulsivity and lack of thinking nukes my social interactions.

I still have no idea how to deal with this, by the way... no amount of therapy helped.

At the end of the day, ADHD is a disability. There is nothing funny about it. Would you laugh at an amputee for moving weird? No! Then why would you laugh at an ADHD'er for the traits? You feel me?

You're absolutely right, but I want to point out there are plenty of people who would laugh at an amputee for moving weird.

Is there a free place for me too? I don't think I am one of them, for the simple fact that I don't know what it means. Can someone kindly explain this to an ignorant person like me? What is it about? Is it a disease or a character trait?
I hope I'm not being too indiscreet.
Anyway, LYA. 🤗

Hey @fake, well, of course you didn't waste yourself on explanations. 🤔 Even I was able to search online. I wanted to hear an explanation directly from someone affected by it, to make them express and vent, break the ice and start a discussion.

I'd say it's a disorder, not a disease. The term Neurodiversity refers to situations where a person's brain works differently than what is considered a typical person's brain. This is usually referring to how the brain developed and deals with external stimuli. This can include if something external affects the brain such as head injuries, but usually it refers to people who are born with conditions like ADHD or being on the Autistic Spectrum.

For example, I have difficulty picking up social cues in conversations and so I have to be extra mindful of my words and actions. It makes big social gatherings very exhausting since if feels like I have to be on high alert for hours at a time. Also, certain food textures make me gag and I have to make sure that there's food options I can eat if I go out to a restaurant.

I see. Have you been diagnosed by a doctor or psychologist? The diagnosis is made with a simple interview, through psychological tests or through an objective brain examination (e.g. electroencephalogram, CT scan, magnetic resonance imaging or similar).
I ask this because these symptoms seem vague and generic, and may recall other character dysfunctions.

Neurodivergence is like
Autism, ADHD, BPD, OCD, Schizophrenia etc.
Disabilities, basically

Having a trait or two doesn't mean you have a divergence, necessarily. It's when you combine a bunch of traits and they are proven to impact your life that you can get diagnosed.

Neuropsychological evaluations are a great start in diagnosis.

I’m not one but I’m interested in this topic as well and this is a great thread to encourage this kind of healthy positive space. Good job OP!
Edited the first post to make it clearer - anyone is welcome here! We are stronger in unison.

I was formally diagnosed by a psychologist. I took a series of tests where I tasked with doing thing such as solving math problems, testing my reading comprehension, and describing pictures of people. It's been a long time since I took these tests so I apologize if I can't be more descriptive.

I hear that some people self-diagnose but I usually fear that their biases might blind them to other issues they have so I can't recommend doing that. I admit that I had issues growing up, but couldn't nail down why I had issues so working with a professional was a big help.

As a self-diagnoser, I want to chime in with my own perspective.

I acknowledge that there's a non-insignificant chance my self-diagnosis is wrong. I'd love to get an official diagnosis and help, but unfortunately my country's psychiatric system is fucked beyond repair, so I doubt that will ever happen. In meantime, I found comfort and understanding among other ADHD people, regardless of my official diagnosis.

It's a shame that health care isn't something universal and we have to resort to stuff like self-diagnosis. I'm glad I was professionally diagnosed, because my symptoms could be almost anything. I believe it's nearly impossible to reach a correct diagnosis without professional assistance.

Don't get the wrong idea, tho. If you concluded that you have ADHD, and using ADHD strategies improves your life, go for it!

Unfortunately, [condition] defines me, no matter how much I wish it didn't.
What you just described, my friend, is what we call 'ableism'.

Alas, not just yours, but any. 😁 It is known that psychiatrists limit themselves to dishing out medicines left and right without investigating too much and to get rid of annoyances; they thus remove certain symptoms to create others. In my opinion, the most effective therapy is the so-called talking cure invented by good old Sigmund Freud; it allows you to let off steam and open up to the world, without being too invasive and without altering the body with various concoctions. In other words: prefer psychoanalysis to psychiatry! 😉

People are different. If you can get by with just therapy, that's great - amazing, even! But others (like me) can't function like a normal human being without ADHD medication. Life is pain.

The best treatment is always therapy first, and medication later if necessary.

It's like playing survival horror game with tank controls, while everyone else is playing with dual stick somehow. Or at least that's just my experience with it.
Unmedicated ADHD is like playing Guile but all you can input is shoto moves (random normals come out and you get your ass whooped)
