A Journey To A Rough World

It’s a slow day and it felt every minute felt like an hour. Thirty five minutes past the hour of two in the afternoon, it was our afternoon coffee break. While some are vaping and some lit a smoke on the building’s designated smoking area some chose to remain on their cubicle tables for some coffee, tea , soda and a light snack. Me on the other hand staring at my phone reading some text messages, some groceries I need to pick on my way home after work. I played some tunes on my phone’s MP3 player on which my playlist is on a shuffle. After two tracks later the song “Long Trip South of Heaven” plays, probably one of my favorite songs on my files as it always kinda gives me a kickstart.

Kyle Reese met this fella on his way to the time machine.

Now that I felt a bit invigorated I decided to watch some YouTube videos just to get some laughs or whatever. As I scroll through the feed, a video game playthrough caught my attention. It’s a playthrough of a game that’s quite familiar the game was Journey of Silius. But that name wasn’t familiar to me probably because I knew it as Raf World a Famicom game. The thing is the Nintendo Entertainment System or NES didn’t make it to our shores and what we got is the Nintendo Family Computer or Famicom.

This red and white baby was every little boys dream machine.

I remembered that it’s one of the games we used to play at my cousins house every weekends. Our weekend schedule is like this; early morning breakfast and the some house chores after that we all watched some weekend morning cartoon before we head out and play our hearts out. We all then went back for lunch and again some house chores. After everything’s done comes the one of the highlights of the day video game time. Imagine this four boys playing single or two player games passes the controller to another once he lost a life. That’s how we spend three to four hours of our weekend afternoon.

Cutting it close now to head back to the past to protect Sarah Connor.

A quick fact Journey to Silius or Raf World were supposed to be a Terminator game but somewhere during production Sunsoft lost the license to the said IP prompting them to alter the story and some game sprites.
Enough of that now for the main story arc.

From what I saw on the video the playthrough was almost thirty minutes long and given the fact that it is one of my childhood games I give more than an hour to finish it. Feeling confident I played through the whole duration of my bus ride home which is almost two hours. My commute home ended with me barely reaching the stage 2 boss and have to put my game on save state.
Stunned, thinking to myself this game is harder than I remembered or could it be that there is something that I’m doing wrong. From what I heard this game is a MegaMan clone but from I’m experiencing it’s more like Ninja Gaiden meets Contra.
After dinner I tried to continue where l left and I found out that the easiest part of the game are the boss fights. I spent another hour playing it but this time I tried to memorize the enemy movements.

Auto scrolling stage with conveyor threads plus falling blocks equals utter frustration.

I decided to stop after beating the level four boss. That’s when I got this realization, this game is definitely harder than MegaMan for the reason that the enemies in that game drops more items. However the enemies in this game rarely drops health and ammo items. Another thing I noticed is all you secondary weapons share a single gun energy bar in other words once you used up all your ammunition you’re back to your default pea shooter.

I called it a night and save the final stage for tomorrow only to be reminded of the frustration we experienced with the game as a kid.
For the last stage there are no enemies but instead you are thrown in an auto scrolling stage with one heck of a platforming action. And yes folks I have visited game over land for more than I can remember.

Die T800 die!!!

As I near the end of my “journey” I was reminded of those happy times I spent with cousins my so called wingmen. We do still see each other during the Holidays Season, it’s kinda like our family tradition. As for me I got another story to tell them when we see each other again.

Okay final boss fight, I forgot to tell you that before I enter the stage fight there’s a a mid boss waiting. I kinda screwed up the last mid boss almost depleting my secondary weapo ammo. Thus leaving me with little to no ammo right when I needed it the most. One more frustrating fact is when during the boss fight your ammo won’t be replenished. Thus leaving the boss fight to drag longer that it should be.

Saying this game is a MegaMan clone is unfair….for MegaMan. One thing is for sure you can see the difficulty of a Sunsoft game on this one.
As much as I felt so much nostalgia with game I won’t be again anytime soon.

This concludes my Journey to the Raf World of Silius.
A huge thanks for reading and May you have great rest of your day!

This is Stingy Perry signing off!

BEAT ME TO IT

This game was my favorite on a NES Disc for PSX, I agree the game can be cheap, but for someone that played that disc i get memories of simpler times
Looks like brilliant minds think a like!
At least you didn't face the glitch gremlin
I used the NES room and played on Delta emulator on iiOS. It worked fine for me thankfully.

Yesssss! This is good!

I have always been fascinated by these games no-one really ever talks about but are actually better than 95% of the junk out there.
It frustrating, fun and nostalgic at the same time, when I playing it the thought of my cousins yelling at me “don’t jump jus yet you doofus” comes back to me!
It was really reminds me of a simpler time.

Very nice Stingy.

And yes, Sunsoft is... rather, was well known for making hard as nails games for the NES....
To be fair, a lot of NES/Famicom games were hard as nails.

I can see the comparison between Ninja Gaiden and Contra.
I thought the same thing when I played this game aeons ago, when I first started emulating things.
I may have made it to the second stage, but I don’t remember now.

Honestly, I had completely forgotten about this game.
Again, great article Stingy. Looking forward to the next.

Yeah before From Software there was Sunsoft, calling their games “challenging” is an understatement!

Let's go Stingy!

Journey of Silius is one of those games I missed out on and only played years later on an emulator, it's the absolute definition of a hidden gem.

Thank you very much guys!
Y’all don’t know how your comments mean to me and I really hope that you don’t get tired of reading my works in the future.❤️

i'll total miss out being able to rent this. then renting was thing you can do to rent nes, games to try them out. before deciding to buying the game. i do wish they was able to keep the Terminator license, as it been the best ip license game ever made.

Sounds like a pretty fun game! And chillin' with cousins are always nice. part of the reason I love games is it's something we'd bond over. Nice Job Perry! ::winkfelix
Thanks for reading bro, and yep those cousins of mine were like big brothers to me. We’ve been so many through a lot and we’re still as close as we were kids.
