I feel like it would be a nice touch. I think there was one on cdr, but I didn't have an account on that service. The best old anime and flash game sites had chatroom on page and was nice to mingle with the community.

I'm not exactly a fan of it...
Nevertheless, i think there are many ways to implement such a feature.
Maybe the easiest way is to have a Chat Thread, which is just an ordinary thread, but visible on every page like a panel?
But i hope there would be an option to disable it.

It’s possible what Patches meant was something more akin to the status feature but anyone can comment on and it functions vaguely similar to a twitch chat

It would kill the forums. Plain and simple.
People just stops browsing and making threads they just ask everything there, and those logs get eventually wiped, everything becomes ephemeral which is everything the forum is not meant to be.
I've seen it before. it's much harder to moderate cos you have to be there 24/7, and it's also very heavy on server resources when you have many users, tons of ajax calls hitting the database can't be cached if it's real time. I know this has likes but I wouldn't do it.
I know some people don't like it but a https://retrogametalk.com/discord is the only thing I can offer for chatting purposes.
