A massive magnitude 8.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Russia Tuesday, sparking tsunami warnings in Alaska and Hawaii and alerts for other areas of the West Coast.

The earthquake occurred about 85 miles off the east coast of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula with a depth of nearly 12 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Magnitude 6.3 and 6.9 aftershocks were also reported in the area, according to USGS.

A tsunami warning was announced for Alaska's Aleutian Islands and Hawaii. California, Oregon and Washington are under a tsunami advisory, and the U.S. territory of Guam is under a watch, while the threat is being evaluated.

While the story says 8.7, it's been upgraded to 8.8, which is about 40% more energy than 8.7.

This would make it one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded. Stay safe.

Been a while since the last real big one. Last time an 8.5+ occurred was back in April 2012.
Just before that was the infamous 3.11 quake that wrecked Japan.

Looks like a pretty substantial area might be hit. This video is a few minutes old now, I think they're getting the first surge

And 1 earthquake is one thing that tends to trigger tons of earthquake from 1 month to few years depending on the location and magnitude, so when such a big earthquake happens most of the risk is because of tsunami sometimes due to the way earthquake happened especially inside of seas/oceans. So for a place earthquake's shock wave may not reach in harmful way but tsunami that reaches may be harmful.

Sometimes earthquakes early sign of some dormant or not so active volcanoes around getting triggered and it causes another natural disaster.

In the end earthquake doesn't kill, what kills are badly designed and developed buildings and urban areas. Fill everywhere with high buildings without any open space for people to escape to and people will naturally die. Sometimes people die not because a building collapses or something, the huge amount of water from roofs of buildings that are filled there so people can swim and all pours on people and they die. However when it comes to tsunami things get really serious, and volcano is another big deal natural disaster.
