What are your top five games of 1998?

Oh man, 1998 was stacked! Off the top of my head, I’d say: Xenogears (absolute masterpiece), Breath of Fire III (yeah I know it’s technically late ’97 in Japan but we got it in ’98, so it counts for me), Metal Gear Solid (of course), Ocarina of Time (mandatory), and Parasite Eve (because horror + RPG = chef’s kiss). Honestly though... Xenogears kinda lives rent-free in my head to this day.

An incredible year and some impeccable lists so far -
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Magic Knight Rayearth
Especially these, and since the big ones have already been mentioned (Xenogears, MGS, Fallout, obligatory OOT) I would like to nominate a dark horse.

Yes, it did technically come out in 97, but this was the real version with the optional VN that never got translated, nor released in English. I miss this era of Capcom so much man.

I always hear 1998 in Leons voice from the opening of RE4, the og one, can't see that year without hearing his voice

So many genre defining games came out that year though. I recall that it seemed like everything was brilliant.

1. Fallout 2
2. Baldur's Gate
3. Sanitarium
4. LSD Dream Emulator
5. Ocarina of Time
6. Serial Experiments Lain
7. Sonic Adventure
8. Xenogears
9. Parasite Eve
10. MediEvil or Dink Smallwood

Plenty of good games this year too. This reminds me that I have yet to play Panzer Dragoon Saga...

A bit off-topic but on October 4th 1998, I saw my childhood buddy Kevin get nabbed by a black sedan.
Never seen him since, I hope he's okay.

1. Metal Gear Solid
2. Resident Evil 2
3. Zelda: Ocarina of Time
4. Half-Life
5. Spyro the Dragon
Hey we have some similarities!

Mine are the following:
1. Metal Gear Solid.
2. Resident Evil 2.
3. Marvel vs Capcom 1.
4. Sonic Adventure 1.
5. Pokémon Yellow Edition.

Honorable mentions
Tekken 3:
Its PSX port was in 98, but it was released in arcades in 97.

Street Fighter Alpha 3:
I enjoyed this as a kid but not so much as an adult. My top 5 consists of games I still enjoy to this day.

Tomba!/Tombi! 1:
This game did release in 98... but to the western world. It initially dropped during Christmas of 97 in Japan. Not sure if that counts because I really do love that game.

King of Fighters '98:
It's KOF, but when the series was perfected. A blast to play to this day.

1998 is also the year I was born.

My Personal Top:

1 - Zelda no Densetsu: Toki no Ocarina ~ The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
2 - Zelda no Densetsu: Yume o Miru Shima DX ~ The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX
3 - Biohazard 2 ~ Resident Evil 2
4 - Crash Bandicoot: Warped (Crash Bandicoot 3)
5 - Real Bout Garou Densetsu 2: The Newcomers ~ Real Bout Fatal Fury 2: The Newcomers

Extra/Bonus:
6 - Half-Life
7 - Street Fighter Zero 3 ~ Street Fighter Alpha 3
8 - The King of Fighters '98: Dream Match Never Ends ~ The King of Fighters '98: The Slugfest

Considering 1998 is often considered to be one of, or even straight up the best, years for gaming, it's tough to narrow it down to 5 with the sheer quality of releases, but in no particular order:

Metal Gear Solid
Baroque
Ridge Racer Type 4
Radiant Silver Gun
Resident Evil 2

Honorable mentions:
King of Fighters '98
Banjo-Kazooie
Ocarina of Time
Tekken 3
Xenogears
Parasite Eve
