Or you could simply be willing to go back and learn about the history of games by actually playing them.
I reached a simple conclusion about this era of games , gaming didn't get good until the SNES era , prior to this games were hella primitive and limited by technology

And are clunky and janky so why bother...

That's kinda close minded. Sorry but the NES defined how games could be for many genres and had the first functional gamepad.

Even several early Genesis titles had quality to them.

I mean even SNES era games were limited by technology, what does that change?

Thats the thing NES games and previous ones built a good solid base and foundation to gamin design pillars etc , SNES advanced it and then PS1 and PC took it further and kept going further.

Those old games were all there was at the time they were "new" groundbreaking etc that's no longer the case it's like RE1 everyone went crazy when it dropped but in 2025? It's extremely mid game.

The only proper NES game i played was FF3 and it was janky not as much as i expected but it wasn't that good , that came out in 1990 , +when it comes to sound/music the NES and anything designed for it sounds horrible.

only around SNES time video games soundtrack became good.

Oh this is an excellent year for games; I’ll go
  • Mega man 4
  • Streets of rage
  • Super ghouls n ghosts
  • Street fighter 2
  • Batman: return of the joker
  • Fatal fury
  • Bill & ted’s excellent adventures
  • Sonic Eraser

SNES expanded upon what has already been built.

But Genesis and PC Engine games are also good despite predating the SNES.

Also I think that early PSX hasn't aged as well as 2D.

There weren't that much ground for every genres back then to begin with.

I'm sorry but the whole "if xxxx came out today it wouldn't have been good" is a bit of a weird argument.

Furthermore the Gamecube remake is still good even to this day.

You're cherry picking a single RPG out of every game genre on the console? Why ignoring Dragon Quest III when it comes to RPGs? Also what about Super Mario Bros 3 that is still considered to be one of the best 2D Mario game around or even Megaman games?

when it comes to sound/music the NES and anything designed for it sounds horrible. Only around SNES time video games soundtrack became good.
That's completely dishonest considering the large amount of memorable OSTs in that era.

Same with some of the Genesis games.

Thats what i said SNES built upon the solid principles built by NES and such devices.

PCs were usable but suffered from being pretty darn expensive and not everyone back then liked to publish games for PC it won't be until blizzard started cranking out games and their games meeting great success that PC started becoming appealing device to game on , later valve would solidify the PC gaming with HL and more companies soon after.

Yeah PS1 games aren't exactly known for their awesome highly detailed graphics nowdays.

Which is why it was a era of experimental ideas and soon after set the basis for what would become genre defining features.

Its not really that argument , i just didn't like RE1 that much mostly because monsters had a bad animation timing with what's going on in the game basically a zombie when getting up or falling down would have his actual physical game presence also called Collison vanish making me waste valuable bullets shooting nothing , the only saving grace for this error was i had emulator save otherwise the game would have been very frustrating , RE2 was a significant improvement especially in animation speed syncing well with what's going on.

Cuz i haven't played dragon quest? I'm not a fan of Mario? And megaman? They may be well made games but sorry I'm not interested in platformers.

Same with some of the Genesis games
Square probably used the technology everyone else used to create music at the time so it's fair from my POV to assume everything else sounds like total shit just like FF3 music.

Most of it is and HAS to be nostalgia BS i see nothing amazing about these games , it's just nostalgia by the elderly.

There is a good chance I'm wrong about this.

I was playing Sonic The Hedgehog on Sega Genesis. Also had a Game Boy with Operation C.

Putting up imaginary walls to not expose yourself to a subject's history without actually finding out for yourself is a great way to go about things

If finding out means having to deal with clunky , janky and frustrating outdated game design nope i would prefer not to find out at all.

Mega Man is a solid series but it had a bunch of sequels that were yearly releases and used the same engine. Of course they were going to get better. Then the SNES came along with Mega Man X and blew the first 6 games out of the water. lol

Yea that's what it is SNES is when things started to REALLY take off.

Good thing that doesn't happen nowadays, I guess.
It does but at least blizzard moved away from symmterical balance

And square made switching jobs much smoother so all in all much smoother than before.

Warcraft II has a slow start, but it's still solid.
Not so much , when it came out it was such a massive hit but it doesn't hold up at all in gameplay department the factions being mirrors hurts the game more than anything else.

The missions need an update in AI scripts to field larger armies and overall increase difficulty of the base game

I guess I just don't get the argument. Of course an older title isn't going to have the developments made later by fine-tuning genre conventions or whatever. It doesn't make an old game not worth playing to me.

That said, Warcraft II has absolutely nothing to do with 1991 (which is the actual topic) so where is this discussion even going?

It makes it difficult to get into these games and having to deal with old game design , it hampers the experience which you are used to at least being quite smooth that's why i find remakes like FF1 and FF2 PS1 versions better to play than going back and playing the very original game cuz why do i have to put up with 1987/1988 technical limitations that add nothing to the experience but make it more clunky and worse if i can play the same game but with quality of life improvements that breed more joy when playing the game.

+for me i find old games colors to be an absolute mess all FF1-FF3 have absolutely awful colors only fixed when FF4 came around and further amplified by FF5 then FF6 took it to the next level.

Case and point there is or at least from my POV see no reason in playing these games like how they came out in the 80s if there is an updated version i would just go with that , sure these games have and hold a lot of weight as they would place the pillars of the video games as we know but other than their historical significance? I don't think so

Other than educational purposes there is not much reason to look up these games like yay let's find out what's the first JRPG or the first RTS ok this how it looked like this is how it played this is how the genre started nice that's all i need to know.

It might in some cases be worth going more in depth and seeing how some ideas that a genre started with as experimental ideas that were phased out in favor of something else like FF3 requiring job points to switch to other jobs or age of empires 1 having trade be not only gold oriented but you can also trade food and wood in those cases it does get more interesting.

I'm looking at a list and wow. I was an infant and I haven't played any of these, really.
