Super Metroid: Fix Collection Patch is a purist-friendly bugfix patch that addresses various flaws and inconveniences in Super Metroid.
Over the years, numerous fixes were developed and included in larger projects, such as "Super Metroid Redux" and "Project Base". These projects are masterpieces when it comes to ROM hacks, but they also make substantial changes to the game that may not appeal to some players.
The aim of this patch is to isolate some of these fixes and provide them in a single collection, creating the cleanest possible vanilla Super Metroid experience while preserving the original game design, controls, mechanics, balance, and intended feel.
Included Fixes:
.) X-Ray Fix in Fireflea Rooms (by PJBoy)
- The X-Ray Scope now reveals secrets in rooms with Fireflea enemies.
- Previously, it was difficult to 100% the game without a guide, because an Energy Tank is hidden behind a false wall in such a room in the lower-right area of Norfair.
.) Reserve Tank Bugfixes (by Nodever2 and Benox50)
- Prevents the loss of invincibility frames when auto-reserves activate.
- Prevents heat damage when auto-reserves activate.
- Prevents a crash when pausing while auto-reserves are active.
- Prevents Reserve Tanks from emptying if Samus is fully healed when they are used in auto or manual mode.
- Fixes an issue where deselecting and reselecting the refill button during manual refill causes it to resume.
- Allows pressing A during manual refill at any time to stop refilling.
.) Kraid Graphical Glitches Fix (by PJBoy)
- Fixes graphical errors that occur after defeating Kraid.
.) Space Jump Fix (by ShadowOne333)
- Fixes the Space Jump no longer working after falling for too long.
.) Fixed Unlocked Tourian (by ShadowOne333, Smiley and PJBoy)
- Makes the Tourian doors allow you to return to Crateria normally after encountering the Super Metroid (a.k.a. the "Baby").
- Prevents the player from becoming trapped in Tourian when using the save station before the Mother Brain room.
.) Super Missle Fix (by Kejardon and JAM)
- Fixes glitches that can occur when firing Super Missles.
.) Miscellaneous Bugfixes (by Nodever2, Benox50, Amoeba, and PJBoy)
- Allows access to the Screw Attack in the menu without the Spring Ball or Hi-Jump Boots.
- Prevents crashes caused by pausing during reserve activation.
- Prevents crashes when using the X-Ray Scope on a respawning PLM.
- Fixes Bomb Blocks not breaking if Samus is Screw Attacking in the wall jump pose.
- Fixes a crash after 100+ hours of gameplay if an Eye Door is killed on the same frame its projectile spawns.
- Fixes various problems associated with the Speed Booster.
- Fixes problems with the Screw Attack while wall jumping.
- Fixes glitchy colors when transitioning to the Blue Suit palette from the Screw Attack palette.
- Fixes Samus losing invincibility frames when hitting an enemy with the Screw Attack.
This patched version is a nice way to play Super Metroid in a way that retains all the bugfixes included in those popular improvement hacks but without taking away any of the base experience and vanilla feel of the game. In effect making it feel more authentic than those other options.
Think of it like this; imagine if Super Metroid was a game released in recent years on a digital storefront like Steam. This patch would be like a new bugfix centric update patch in that imagined scenario.
Most users would be satisfied with a hack like Project Base, but this is for those who would like the game to be as purist friendly as possible but still fixed of the known issues the game had.
