Game Description:

Makai-mura is the Japanese name for Ghosts 'N Goblins and the original title meant Demon World Village.

Following you can find a box of hacks that either would like to improve the game, translate it, or both. At the best of my attempts, if you don't see a combination, it means it didn't work.

Ghosts 'N Goblins PLUS: (v1.0 by DvD Translations https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/9162/)

Believe it or not, when MakaiMura was localized for the North American market as Ghosts ‘n Goblins, Capcom actually made it easier. For example, originally, you couldn’t even continue without entering a special code every time. Although the NES version of the game has a built in stage select feature, when it is used it: constantly requires you to choose your stage every time you die, it doesn’t allow you to select the round, it does not allow you to choose your starting weapon, and it requires a difficult button pattern to activate. Additionally, the ending credits also required a difficult button pattern to be entered just to see them after passing the game on the 2nd round.

Ghosts ‘n Goblins + was created to correct all of these problems. It fixes all of these issues and a lot more as detailed below and explained in even more detail in the ReadMe.

When you can effectively save your game and you don’t have to live in fear of picking up a bad weapon, the difficulty now feels somewhat reasonable and the game is a lot more fun to play. You can finally pass the game without cheating, or cheat as much as you want and see all the endings, or try battling rocket zombies on Round 9… all while skipping seeing the darn map screen every time you die if you feel like it.

Patch Features:

Stage Select Enhancements: Stage, Round, and Weapon select is automatically activated whenever 1 PLAYER or 2 PLAYERS is selected on the main menu, but only activated for each player one time before playing. Each player gets to choose on their controller:

    • Any Stage: A and B buttons
    • Round up to 9: Right and Left on the Joypad
    • Staring Weapon: Up and Down on the Joypad
    • By default only valid stages to continue at and weapons for that stage are allowed to be selected. But, simply hold down Select and all stages that can be started from are allowed and all weapons, even those that would be impossible to have for the that Stage and Round combination, are allowed to be selected.
    • If Stage 1 A is chosen for Round 1 the Intro is shown, otherwise the Map is shown.

Ending Credit Enhancements:

    • On Round 2, the Ending Credits are shown if any button is pressed.
    • On Round 3 and higher, the good ending is shown and the ending credits are always shown.
    • After seeing the ending, the game always continues on Stage 1 A of the next round, finally allowing Round 3 to be played. (You could play Round 4 and higher originally, but not Round 3 except for Stage 7).
    • All 4 typos were corrected in both endings to make the ending match the arcade game. (On purpose, the Engrish was not adjusted, only the typos were fixed.)

Title Screen Menu Enhancements:

    • After dying, CONTINUE is selected by default on the Main menu.
    • The 2 player continue menu default selection matches whatever was previously played.
    • When CONTINUE is not an option, the blank CONTINUE row cannot be selected.

Map Screen Enhancements:

    • The map can be completely bypassed by pressing any button, except for [Start, on the player’s controller.
    • While the map is scrolling any button pressed will immediately cancel it and start the game.

Player 2 Control Enhancements:

    • Each player can pause and un-pause their game, but not the other players.
    • Either player can control either of the menus.
    • Either player cancel the demo.

Player Ready Screen Enhancements:

    • Player Ready Screen no longer locks up displaying more than 9 lives and now properly displays up thru 99 lives.
    • The Round, which was never displayed before, is now shown on the Player Ready screen. To keep the change as minimal to the experience as possible, it is only shown on Round 2 and higher.

Player 2 Only Game Enhancement:

    • Playing ONLY 2UP no longer starts off the game by showing player 1 dying.

Arcade Conversion Mod: (v1.0 by minachun https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/2612/)

Here is a graphics conversion for Ghosts ‘n Goblins which changes the graphics to look more like its arcade counterpart.

Use this on a Japanese version of the ROM for it to work correctly.

Arcade Conversion Fair Play Add-on Mod: (v1.0 by LANCUSTER https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3237/)

Before you - a facilitating hack of the most pitiless game on Famicom.”Makaimura Arcade Conversion - Fair Play” (original hack made by 2CH) have a row of changes, notedly facilitating passing of the game:

    • Now you can continue the game as you please. Just press “Start” on the title screen after game over.
    • A select weapon code was inculcated (button “Select”, press more smooth to propose a necessary weapon). Select weapon code is taken from @Lomax hack.
    • Time of after-hit twinkling is increased.
    • The amount of shots is decreased for all large and smart enemies
    • All levels are improved, added the forks.
    • A torch and cross (distance of flight) are improved.
    • The number of shots is increased for the last boss … ‘cause he very easy.
    • Well, and finally - now you get the correct ending at the first passing. Indeed, if you will begin a game repeatedly, you will be moved to the level with a false boss, whereupon will return on beginning of game.

Hints: Large flying demons is easily to avoid, if you running to the stair and getting down on her downward. A fire-spitting dragon can be killed not only by torch, but also by axe (and then and by a dagger - at 6 level he in general easily falls down a dagger). A final boss can be killed not only by a cross, but also by torch. Only at last level you must take a cross, or to propose him as a weapon and “pour out” one life.

P. S.: Enjoy!

Special treasure bonus for the readers that have got so far (congrats!):

  • !!!Ghosts 'N Goblins - In Garbo World!!! What happens when a patch goes bad (but still retains playability?) Find out in this epic failure.

Which one should I play?

  • Makaimura (Japan) (ArcadeConversion v1.0 minachun - FairPlay 1.0 LANCUSTER)
    • This fine addition presents an amazing fast-scrolling and a well tuned new graphic palette (+ fair enemies). Really clicked with me as less-enraging experience, it may with you too?
  • The Plus is amazing but doesn't support the Easy Mode Mod (crashes).. and I cannot beat without it, plain and simple ^_^. The ability to choose weapon, stage and round might feel a bit too cheat-y for some people.
  • To each their own .. You choose!

Ehm.... ENOUGH TALK... NOW IT'S GHOSTS 'N GOBLINS TIME!!
