I think we have all had a moment when we just... kept going and ended up doing something just because we could, even though it was clearly not going to be worth the effort once — and if — completed.

Remember yours?

Mine was getting the original Fallout to run on DOS... on a tablet.

This wasn't an original idea of mine, but the result of some late-night, sleep-deprived searching that led me to a half-buried tutorial with a quarter of the images missing... My kind of insanity.

Just getting the necessary files to duct-tape this shit together was a complete bitch (apparently, Fallout got a VERY limited DOS release at the very beginning of its run), and then getting my DOS emulator to behave was the stuff nightmares spawn from — mouse drivers and CPU cycles gave me endless grief, and the whole thing was reminiscent of a Commodore 64, with menus crawling by and taking up to a full minute to load.

The end result was me doing some slow-motion pixel-hunting... on an underpowered, seven-inch screen.

As you can imagine, it was beyond unplayable, with lag, bugs, and micro-freezes.

Absolutely not worth it, but Momma V didn't raise no quitter xD

Trying to emulate GameCube on phones. Currently i have 7 years trying to emulate well that console with each new phone that i get my hands for but everything runs slow.

I feel ya there — been trying to get good GC/Wii emulation on mobile for YEARS.

Is the biggest frustrated desire of my pre-teen years. In these years i was completely obsessed with Game Boy Advance and N64 and wanted to try GameCube too. At least PSP is somewhat a consolation prize.

I had one of those a couple of days ago. I decided to try Puyo Puyo Tsuu. I don't think I've ever played such a an intentionally frustrating game. Like I swear it's designed to be as infuriating as possible. I can honestly imagine fist fights breaking out over that game. Like once you start getting buried those trash blobs will always, always fall exactly where you want to put your next piece. It also becomes inhumanely fast rather abruptly at like level three. I made it to stage 21 and I just couldn't do it. That smug fucking witch just taunts me. My wife was getting mad at me for yelling so much at the game and kept telling me to just stop and play a different game. I hadn't even been having fun for a while. I just got obsessed with trying to beat it.

Get a better phone. This is on a 4 year old Motorola with a Mali shipset at 2x resolution. Are you buying potato phones? Screenshot_20260608-170014.png

when I was 14 I got obsessed with the ninja gaiden review made by the AVGN, how he couldn't beat the game and got frustrated with it, and I decided to try to beat it myself, It took me a lot of stress but I managed to do it in 4 days, now I'm a bit more chill about gaming and I mainly play games to actually enjoy them ^^,

I'm not buying anything, i just use the phones that my family gives to me. And they are somewhat inconsistent belong to specs. A earlier phone that i owned for like 3 years had 64GB of space for example before it broke, later i had for a short ammount of time a phone with 128GB of space but for reasons i had to change to my current phone with 32GB of space. Buying isn't a option for me yet.
But my hyperfixation with videogames always encouraged me to fill my devices with emulators and games even if they are powerless.

Trying to get an N64 emulator to run on my really old iPhone SE back in the day. Smash Bros was NOT having it but dammit if I wasn’t still powering through regardless.

I finished all prototype challenges with platinum medal... It wasn't worth it

All my moments are like that...
For the sake of example, using the Great Sword as my Monster Hunter weapon from the start (which I still do) despite it being newbie unfriendly.

Making the diagonals on my damn DSL work perfectly. The most common advise is "just break it in" but here I am, at least ten years later, still trying. And there is no real reason to pursue this. I have a DSi XL with no yellowing and a new digitizer as well as an RP5, RG ARC S, Switch, Vita, N2DSXL, and several others (all with 100% functional dpads, mind you), and even now as I finalize which of the bunch is going to be this years "vacation handheld," I know I have a new charger and battery in my Amazon cart for the damn DSL.

Whew. So, how is everyone else? Have a good day?

Yugioh Arc V Tag Force Special

so, theres a npc team you can fight in the duel monsters arc
one has a creature that when flipped the player mills their own deck till they draw a magic/trap card
the partner only has monster cards

i was determined to win by playing swords of revealing light and forcing the flip effect to cause a deckout

Getting Diablo 2 to run off my original disks on Windows 10.

Resolution was messed up (and mind you, this was the ORIGINAL VERSION, not LOD) and I had to jump through a TON of hoops such as different wrappers held together by duct tape and sheer fucking will. I could have put in the CD key on battle net, but I refused, lol. Then I downloaded a program called Cactus so I could select the version of D2 that I wanted. I didn't want to play 1.00 but I didn't want to play the newest version either. Was not worth the effort...

That said I'm a very stubborn person in general, and I'm a programmer so I pretty consistently run into this sort of issue, albeit not entirely game related.

Playing through Zelda II for the first time on a Famicom Disk System when I couldn't speak the language. Thank god for the internet, otherwise I never would have completed it.

Middle Earth : Shadow of Mordor...

That game literally made me discover a whole new dimension of hate.

Kept trying to kill that one snarky Orc captain during my first hours on the game. Each time, he absolutely slaughtered me, taunting me. Infuriated one try after the other, I just couldn't leave him be and continue the main quest to level up and grow in power. No, I hunted him down instead, made my life mission to get that specific, hateful Orc, each time I respawned, as Ahab with Moby Dick. And everytime, no matter the strategy, I miserably died at his feet, only to watch him enjoying the moment and mocking me. My pride ! My poor ego ! How could he ? I had to persevere and end him immediately, get revenge, right ? Right ?...

Well, as a result, each of my defeat made him even stronger... My misplaced pride turned the bastard into a monstrous, max level Orc captain with almost no weaknesses and just buffs at the very beginning of the game, haunting the map as my nemesis, embodiement of my gaming sin....
Until I learned from my mistake, avoided him until much later in the playthrough as I levelled up, grew strong and capable enough to ambush him with a chance of winning. And after a long, stressful and viceral battle (only arrows, in very limited supply, slowly replenishing, could damage him), hitting and running, dragging him through the map, the miracle, at long last ! The slowmotion animation of his fall as the final blow took him out, absolute cinema. The spurt of black, noxious ichor as the last arrow hit, pure nectar. His death cry, the sweetest melody. The shock and surprise in his eyes as the reaper claimed him, my priceless trophy. My hardest battle of the entire game, and the most satisfying victory, completely irrelevant storywise, totally unnecessary, an absolute waste of time, energy, rage and sweat. Lesson learned, I grew wiser after that experience and didn't repeat that stupid mistake.

Until the first hours of the sequel, Shadow of War, that is... Let's say I helped a few orcs in their carriers... but certainly not as much and not as painfully as the first game ! I quickly refrained from repeating the same mistakes, and moved on, with a few frustrating moments here and there, bearable in comparison.

Oh, Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War, but mostly Shadow of Mordor, I shall remember thee...

Trying to beat NES Battletoads. I wasn't even having any fun with it and probably did it just for the sake of saying I beat it. I've played hard games where at times it seemed like I wont be beating it but eventually I get through it somehow but Battletoads genuinely felt impossible. I doubt I ever want to revisit that game.
Another time was more a case of my own stupidity but I remember having so much trouble with Saturn emulation especially with the whole disc swapping thing and making m3u files. Looking back at it now it was much simpler than I had made it out to be but at the time I just was not able to make heads or tails of it. At least in this case going through all the trouble was actually worth it since Saturn has a great library.
