Ok so I tried/wanted to try the recommended emulators from this list and these were the issues:
  • Mupen64plus-next crashes
  • ares has high requirements
  • simple64 and rmg dont work since I have Windows 8.1
  • Bizhawk is too slow
  • I also used to use parallel-n64 and project64 but I have been told that I shouldnt use them anymore.
  • Project64-legacy worked like shit, and it doesnt even let me add more plugins
The n64 roms I have are Mario 64, F-zero x, zelda ocarina of time, hybrid heaven, castlevania legacy of darkness, goldeneye 007, mystical ninja starring goemon, diddy kong racing, donkey kong 64, banjo kazooie, and smash remix
So, what should I use, then?

I'm not active on the emulation scene for PC, but I agree that you should stay the hell away from Project64.

I honestly recommend Android emulation the most, particularly old versions of N64Droid.

RetroArch with Mupen64Plus-Next core would most likely be you're best bet, since you are running Windows 8

I don't like it, but you are running a very outdated OS. so have to take what will run on you're system with good results.

not making fun or anything, just how it is, Most Emulators don't support OS that far back anymore

And you said "simple64 and rmg dont work since I have Windows 8.1"

I use Project64 3.something on a computer made from the year 2000. Worked just fine for me except a few games....lucky all but 1 are ports. Yeah, I know about the time project64 had malware on it...but i rarely update unless i can't play a game. I have tried Parallel and its ok. Mupen64 SUCKS!!!!

Try it out first, it may be the solution to your problem. Also, why stay away from project64? I've heard the stories but you can find a safe download here
Is it safe bc it had the pop up removed?

As far as i know, it's safe because it doesn't have the supposed malware that P64 was packaged with. The pop up that asks for a donation it's still there but you can circunvent it by making P64 the predetermined applitacion to open N64 roms and then opening them directly, which launchs the game inmediately and the pop up doesn't appear.

There was also this to avoid the pop up: https://github.com/Rosalie241/PJ64Launcher
