The (Un)Welcomed Sequel (Not) Everyone Wanted

The 3rd Birthday is a third person shooter, action rpg that serves as the third entry in the Parasite Eve series. Some say it’s a sequel to some a spin-off and even a reboot but one thing is for sure it tore its fandom apart.

But before we proceed please be advised that this retrospective may contain some spoilers and most definitely some cringe and whacked out theory or two from a certain fan(me) so please bear that in mind as you go on.

Now that we have that one out of the way here we go…….

This game is initially perceived as an episodic game for mobile phones. Square Enix wanted to capitalize on the success they had with their titles such as Final Fantasy 7 and Front Mission which had mobile game release treatments prior that. The development for the game was shelved for a year or two until Tetsuya Nomura pushed it as a console title be it the PSP. The decision was made because of the developer’s aim for “realism” something that the PSP’s could deliver and something mobile phones couldn’t back then. Another thing worth mentioning is that Square Enix hired Hexa Drive a Japanese indie game dev studio to co-develop the game. Hexa Drive is consists of former Capcom employees most notable for their work on the sci-fi shooter Lost Planet. The game received mixed reviews the negative ones pointing out the confusing story and the said approach to realism.

The game features an ots(over the shoulder) and cover shooting mechanics with a lock on system that enables you to move around while shooting your firearm. Gone are the Parasite Abilities of the first two games and it was replaced by the Overdive and Liberation. Overdive is the ability to transfer you consciousness to an NPC having the ability to control them which makes it feel like more of a squad shooter, not only that you can Overdive to a nearby NPC to gain advantage of the terrain but also serves as a quick escape especially if your HP is low allowing you to control someone with full health. Another thing worth mentioning is the Overdive Kill a button prompt during combat that allows you to Overdive to an enemy and make them explode. Liberation on the other hand functions as a special skill which makes you move faster and inflict more damage at certain span of time.

Having rpg elements this game has some quite of customization to it. You have access to wide variety of guns such as pistols, rifles(assault/sniper) shotguns and some special weapons like Lightning Farron’s Gunblade. Parasite Ability is replaced by Over Energy which utilizes an EN chip which was dropped by certain enemies that you will acquire and equip to have access to some buffs like HP regeneration, making your Liberation meter fills faster and so on.

Once again you played as Aya Brea but this time she is totally nerfed, suffering from amnesia stripped out of her powers confused and totally vulnerable. Having the power to transfer her consciousness to another person she uses a device called Overdive System to go back in time to confront the new threat called the Twisted. The game’s narrative is told through cutscenes and in game dialogue. The game is split into chapters and divided in several segments. For an rpg this is quite short about less than 10 hours per playthrough. Though there are a lot of items that you won’t be able to unlock on a single playthrough and multiple replays is advised if you want to unlock every weapon, protective gear and that “shower scene”. You can also unlock some in game cheats such as infinite ammo, faster HP regeneration and so much more.

I can’t tell you more about the game with giving some more further spoilers. But being the lazy person that I am there’s no way in heck that I’m gonna waste my energy to elaborate more of the plot. Rather let me tell you about something else. This game somewhat serves as both a farewell and reintroduction for Aya as a character. She is now portrayed as someone who can feel fear and lost the convictions she showed on the previous games. That being the part of the developer’s vision of realism. They don’t want to show Aya as somewhat like an action hero but instead someone who gets scared wounded and confused being unsure of a lot of things including her own self. That same “realism” became the subject of a number of controversies.

There’s a third “form” of this somewhat wardrobe damage that leaves nothing to the imagination which I can’t show you!

A game that should’ve been the one to reinvigorate a series that laid dormant for ten years became a game that nobody wanted. Despite the developers’ attempt to breathe new life into the series it became something most of fans couldn’t fully understand. The Parasite Eve series is a product of what we called the Golden Age. A series synonymous of being not afraid to try something new and this game is no exception. Square Enix tried something new but couldn’t get the result they hoped for. Was it doomed by the timing? Ten years is a very long time for a sequel and it didn’t help that the second entry concluded the story with its ending. Still some fans including me see this one as a flawed masterpiece.

Right now I know what you’re thinking. I’ve been cringe yapping and made that microscopic spoiler but where’s that theory.

Okay here it is……….
Have you ever wondered why the two games was never ported to another system after the 2000s? Though most of the PS1 titles got a sequel on PS2 and some are even ported to iOS and Android. And why did they ditch the Parasite Eve title?
My theory has something to do with the title itself. Then Squaresoft only paid the license for the IP including some of its elements and said license expires in a few years if the licensee failed to renew it. If you watched d the movie which is a faithful adaptation of the novel you’ll see that aside from the mitochondria mutation there’s really nothing more that connects it to the game. The in game universe and character rights belongs to Square Enix but since the license expired it really troublesome for them to release without going in some legal shenanigans. And that’s why they ditched the title, changed a lot of things in the lore and hope to breakaway from Parasite Eve and establish a new continuity.

See I told it was a pretty whacked up theory.

Thank you very much for spending time on this cringe trip of mine.

This is Stingy Perry signing off.

I still didn't had the courage to play this game. Aya Brea is one of my favourite female protagonists in video games, and the way they portrait her in this game pisses me off.

Look how they massacred my girl

It’s a case of they wanted to try a lot of things hoping it will work just like the last time.

The most unfortunate of all is they really missed the timing. By the time that they try to bring back the series most of the fandom has moved on. And when they see that it’s being revived it failed to meet some expectations.

I see. I don't mind experimentation in games, but still baffles me that they thought giving this game a Kingdom Hearts/Metal Gear treatment to its story was a good idea.
The only thing good that i heard about this game is the gameplay, which is decent most of the time.

The gameplay is good because they outsourced the development.

I think they kinda learn something from their mistakes with that RTS Heroes of Mana where they fumbled it because they have little to no experience on making that kind of game genre.

As for the story they could’ve thought of something better even if they intend to branch away from the already established PE lore.

I will be honest I liked third birthday allot. But as I only played Parasite eve 2 and I play that one very very late in life. So I have no special attachment or such to the OG games. I just now I had fun playing third birthday on the psp.

But it´s square we are talking about if it´s not Final fantasy or dragons quest or the SaGa series square don´t seam to give much of a frack. I mean look how they butchered Valkyrie Elysium and before Elysium we did not see game in that series sense 2008 when we got Covenant of the Plume on DS.

"no I do not count Valkyrie Anatomia: The Origin as it was only released in JP and US for mobile."

But yeah when it comes to other series they made they get little to no love what so ever because well it´s not their big 3.

This “trilogy” holds a special place in my heart. The 3rd Birthday for me is an rpg disguised as a third person shooter.

Heck there’s no rpg that lets you pilot an attack helicopter and drive a tank while destroying monsters straight out of a hellish horror story.

I bought this game when it first came out during college years in Canada. I often wondered if this was what a "Parasite Eve" game was supposed to be. Eventually, after being introduced to emulation and downloading the previous titles, i had mixed feelings with The 3rd Birthday's approach to the story. The developers application of realism to the new Aya, for me, was plausible. Adding new elements to the series plot can be appreciated as long as the writers and producers were able to some what make it tolerable for players/fans as they progressed. Without sharing any spoilers, ill say this: the plot twists and turns made it enjoyable, but the story progression itself was rushed. It took hours of reflection and reading ingame lore found throughout chapter missions to fully learn it all.

The plot twist is one of the best I had witnessed so far as games are concerned and for me that final act in the game opens up more possibilities if they ever want to continue the series.

Though for me even the story is kinda rushed the writers aimed for players to contemplate what has transpired. It gave us a glimpse of being flung into a world that we don’t know just like Aya did. We’re not just making Swiss cheese out of those twisted but we also need to think and understand this new world that we are in.

100%
3rd birthday is understandbly different from the previous 2 games, especially in gameplay. It was slightly more fun shooting Twisted in real time action whilst clenching teeth and butt cheeks during boss battles.

Look at my buddy Stingy cooking one great article after the other ;D!

I don't think I'd want to play this game, but damn that I'm glad I got to know about it... Never heard about it before (odd as that sounds).

I REALLY love this game. It's a third person shooter on PSP that actually works really well.

Heh, I barely consider PE2 a sequel, make of that what you will.
You are certainly not alone 🍻

Heck, I have trouble thinking of any "trilogy" of games that are so vastly different from one another! Not saying there isn't one out there, but the PE series is definitely not lacking in variety. And I have come across plenty of people that each have a different favorite game among the three. It's the variety / inconsistency between the games that makes them so divisive, but also gives players of different tastes and backgrounds something to latch onto.

For the PE series, I feel there's really no wrong answer when it comes to picking a favorite. Myself, PE2 is my least favorite of the three - but plenty of others like it the best of all.

As far as the author's "theory," um... part of me thinks that may honestly be pretty factual. I've seen it discussed on several different boards over the years. I don't think anyone outside of the Square / Kadokawa offices knows for sure, but it's a logical conclusion to believe that the PE games had to have been licensed from the source material in some form or fashion.

Aya Brea was an in-house creation, of course, so Square[Soft][Enix] is fair to do with them what they please, with or without the PE license or the original author's consent. And I think T3B does an acceptable job of continuing the series with its main character. Personally, I think the story stumbles the most when the other characters from the PE games come into the spotlight... but I really don't want to rip the plotline too much on this board. There's no need - I largely just ignore it, anyway ;->

T3B is a fantastic action game, with excellent visuals given the PSP's limitations. It's a fun game, and definitely worth a try! But as a PE sequel? Um... maybe not so much...

My headcanon says that Parasite Eve has no sequels. The other two games? Merely spin-offs! At least, that's what I've been telling myself for the last decade or two 😅

That's my stance as well, same for Chrono Cross in relation to Trigger. Fine as a standalone game, not so much as a sequel.

This game is like the embodiment of why modern Square Enix sucks ass; convoluted timey-wimey bullshit with character assassination
(I know it's not Aya but her little sister/clone from PE2 but they literally killed Aya...)

All the gaming magazines in my country published an article about this game called “The Game That Killed Aya Brea.” With a devastating criticism of the plot.
And I agree with them.
Technically and graphically, this game is flawless. The most beautiful game for PSP, with nearly ideal realistic graphics. And the most idiotic plot in the history of games.

P.S. Just because:
