I remember being utterly excited by the Ouya.

I couldn't wait to get my hands on one because, well, it sounded like a dream come true. A console designed to let me run all my Android games (including emulators and homebrews) directly on the TV and with a controller? Shut up and take my money.

I was so ready to get one, and I even started putting money aside for when mass production began.

And then... I started hearing some, uh, not-so-great things about it, culminating with an Ashens' video in which he systematically tore it apart after finding a new and boxed model on a thrift store (and this was during the console's early release. I mean, damn) and a CallMeKevin video in which he basically stated that the only good thing about it was the battery that came with the console's wireless controller, because he "needed one for the clock downstairs". I thought that was pretty unfair criticism, but it did dent my confidence on a product that I so desperately wanted to try, but couldn't bring myself to. Perhaps the fact that it had been received with such cold ruthlessness on all forums I was visiting at the time should have clued me in on how unpopular the whole thing seemed to be in the eyes of my fellow gamers.

And to this day, I haven't seen a single one for sale (nor met anyone who owned it). It's a shame, too, because it sounded like a really cool piece of hardware and I'd still be willing to be give it a try, but I believe that it's soon to be become a "collector's item" and I'll never get one for a fair price if that's the case, not when less than 200k were ever sold.

The console seems to be on limbo, too, since the termination of its official storefront. According to Wikipedia, a lot of built-in apps have been rendered unusable because of that (but apparently rooting solves that?).

Ever owned (or was at least interested in) a Ouya?

I saw one many years ago in a Jumbo supermarket in the CD section. Obviously I didn't buy it because of all the things I heard like the CEO calling it "nothing special". Altough it was a great idea but sadly it was already obsolete in terms of technology when the console was released. The cellphone industry evolved too quickly 😔
But at the same time it was very funny seeing Razer loosing a lot of money thanks to the ouya

(You guys have Jumbo, too? Hah. Cool).

Yeah, the cellphone technology just caught up to it in no time. Once I could hook up a keyboard to my phone and broadcast it on a TV, what was the point of having an OUYA?

I remember everyone hyping up the OUYA as the next big console that would rival Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. It was so popular, I even saw advertisements of it in game shops, along with pre-orders and the boxes stacked up.

Nowadays though, you bring it up, and no one knows what you're talking about. It was by far the shortest fad I've ever seen.

As for my thoughts on the thing. Well, I never got to use one. But it sounded cool enough, although in the same way that I thought a Raspberry Pi sounded cool. So in other words, probably not the way the developers wanted it to sound.

Such a shame I never saw one after the initial hype. I definitely would have bought one if I ever saw one dirt cheap.

The only thing I've ever seen in Ouya in was an independent film Filmcow made featuring it as a main antagonist to an Eagle statue.
So its got that as a cultural footprint atleast

The ouya is easily the most bizarre system ever.
Around the time nvidia was trying to do something similar so it wasn’t that unique to begin with.
Ouya has a gimmick where you can try all games for free which was good.
Although the entirety of the thing was a glorified smartphone console because that’s what amateur overconfident game devs only excel at.
The woman who was in charge of promoting the whole thing had no business being anywhere close a game conference because she made some pretty blatant errors like claiming the ouya was the only console with a controller touch pad when the ps4 was literally out. The interview is still on YouTube. It’s peak awkwardness.

I never had the Ouya when it started being sold on Amazon, but I had a Switch Controller that resembles the Controller for the Ouya.

Is this still a good cheap alternative to a recallbox Raspberry Pi or not?

I had an Ouya! I actually enjoyed it quite a bit though it was not nearly as successful as I hoped. It was basically a little dedicated indie game console. What I liked about it was that the games were creative, interesting and cheap. You could also install Kodi and use it as a media center which was a really cool combo for a tiny little game box.

The controller was not bad either IMO. I still have it and I like keeping it around because I love the design of having easy to pop off magnetic panels that reveal two regular AA batteries for power.

My best friend backed the original Kickstarter. He was one of the people who seemed really hyped about it — he thought he’d be playing AAA games for free, as the dev team insinuated. Boy, was he surprised! A week after be bought it, he sold it on for half the price he paid, and felt really miserable about the whole experience afterward.

I still think that a fourth major player in the console market would be a good idea for shaking things up, but they’ll need to have a ton of money behind them. (And it might not even work out then! Remember Stadia?) The micro-console trend of the 2010s was interesting, but they pretty much all sucked, so who cares.

I don't want to mock your friend but this is really naive.

Sadly when you don't have the history nor portfolio of Nintendo, the technology of Sony nor the versatility of Microsoft you're bound to not sell a lot...

I consider that Valve is potentially the fourth major video game editor (as an herald of PC) but entering the console market is barely relevant considering how they're basically PCs with a specific OS and compatible games and pads.

Sega leaving the manufacturing part left a scar in video gaming...

This picture still hurts to see even 20+ years later.

Specially when their last console was so great. It should have been the leading thing, exchanging punches with Sony for generations.

No, and I don’t really want to.😆 It was clear the Ouya was doomed to fail from day one. To this day, Android gaming hasn’t advanced much. The core audience is just too casual.

I bought it ::frown
It wasn't anything other than an android like most are saying. Wasn't worth it, but I did have a little fun with it. Mainly with this game called Amazing Frog?, which believe it or not, was a console exclusive at the time. Its a goofy platformer similar to Goat Simulator.

Another bad purchase for me was buying No Mans Sky on release day::puke

I thought it was interesting but I didn't buy it. Then came the Ashens review.

Did they really say this? How much false advertising was surrounding it at the time?

They said that the console would be able to run triple-A games, and all Ouya software was at least partially free. Critically, they didn't commit to specific titles, but they did run a poll asking people what they'd like to see on the console with choices from Bethesda, EA, and Activision games (most notably, they teased a full-on Skyrim port, which was a big deal in 2021).

That was all complete hooey – the Ouya couldn't even run mobile phone adaptions of big-budget games. It was literally an Android wrapper (the settings menu literally was an stock Android screen) in a small steel box with a controller that had sticky, unresponsive buttons. Us cynical folk never thought it would be anything otherwise, but they tricked a lot of people.
