It used to be 4chan lite then Aaron Schwartz, one of the founders and a free speech absolutist, died and the site went straight to hell. It's a dim shadow of its former self and the hivemind is absolutely insufferable.

I don't use this site but I always found the karma system to be weird.

While I understand that posts violating the rules and/or being insulting on purpose should get removed if you dare having an opinion that doesn't follow the general feeling of said sub-reddit you can apparently get banned from having too much negative karma.

I can see where that could lead since you can also ask to mass downvote someone to make them quit that place.

People misunderstand the design behind reddit and get too emotional about things they shouldn't. There are thousands of subreddits to join and one with sucky modding shouldn't be make or break for a user's experience.

Reddit is a website designed back in the early 2000s and it shows ideas from that era of the internet. The idea of the subreddits is that anyone can create their own interest groups with mods and rule it as they see fit. Each subreddit can establish their own rules and sometimes it takes a nonsensical or oppressive turn. There are also reddit corporate mods that can ban you from the website as a whole for hate speech or harrasment, but I digress. Anyway, the expected response to dealing with a sucky subreddit is to find a new one that covers the same subject. Usually there are multiple subreddits for almost every subject. There's always a counter culture version of any large subreddit with chiller mods. This idea that all reddit mods are oppresive nerds is false.
