OH MY GOD, MUSIC IS ART THERFORE ITS SUBJECTIVE
PEOPLE ONLINE ONLY TREAT MUSIC AS ITS EITHER PEAK OR MID WHEN THERES SOOO MUCH MORE YOU CAN TALK ABOUT
TALK ABOUT THE PRODUCTION, THE INSTRUMENTS, THE VOCALS, WHATEVER
PEOPLE THESE DAYS LISTEN TO A FEW SECS OF A SONG AND JUST JUDGE IT OF THAT, WE'RE TREATING MUSIC AS IF ITS THIS PASSIVE THING AND NOT AN ART FORM THAT CAN BE USED TO EXPRESS ONESSELF AND PEOPLE JUST DONT EVEN BOTHER LISTENING TO THE ALBUM AND JUST RATE IT BASED ON WHO THE PERSON THEY LIKE SAID ABOUT IT
I HATEEEEEEEE ITTT
anyways what do you guys think about music current discourse?

As someone who mostly digs for obscure 80s metal I'm simply not a part of modern music discourse. Sounds like I'm dodging a bullet.

That's no accident; it's the way platforms like Instagram (and, to a lesser extent, YouTube) teach the younger generations how to experience music: as a secondary act to a picture or video, only long enough to remain within Fair Use. It's kind of disgusting.

Uhh I'm still one of those old farts who listen to the whole albums and appreciate their artistic vision/concept. But I think what you described here is actually ANY modern online discourse. People tend to jump into conclusions as fast as possible like their time is so valuable, while in reality they waste all that time on meaningless arguing online. Videogames, music, movies, its happening everywhere. Whole fandoms spend more time and energy to yell at each other instead of enjoying the things they're supposed to like. Everything is considered content therefore its infinite and expendable. Truth is, you either get into the craft to see for yourself what it takes to make any type of art and learn to appreciate it, or mindlessly consume everything as fast as possible and form your opinions exclusively on tier lists from some random internet celebrity.

Sounds like you're attempting to discuss with the wrong people. Not everyone's bound to be an enthusiast, most people don't go further than "I like this" ore the inverse, no matter the artform, and that's fine.
A tip from experience: Don't become that one obnoxious friend who forces your friends to have opinions on things because you want to argue with them ::booshy Man was I corny.

I wouldn't say that's due to social media or whatever, but that it's more based on how conscious you are about the art you're consuming generally. My Gen Z brother and his friends are infinitely more into the music they listen to than any of my friends were growing up. They all treated it like a "secondary act" or whatever. At least until I got more interesting friends lol
I didn't figure out I liked listening to full albums until I was like 17 because it was easier just making playlists of the things I knew I enjoyed, you didn't have to "risk" wasting time listening to a record you ultimately didn't care for.

Well... Music was also really expensive when we were younger. Buying an album was a tremendous investment when I was a teen, so we absolutely wanted to make sure it was the right call.

True, but that's kind of part of my point.

I know it's only anecdotal, but based on juxtaposing how I consumed music when I was younger to how my Gen Z and his friends do, younger people seem to be WAY more keen on exploring stuff they're unfamiliar with on the internet, whereas millennials and back are way more dismissive of applying any sort of "value" to stuff they just found from some random guy online. They grew up in the ages of streaming music but they don't seem to be the ones devaluing it.
Of course this isn't a rule or anything, it's just an observation I've had.
People around my own age demographic seem way more interested in just disparaging new stuff without any inkling of having made an actual effort to care about it in the first place, calling it "not real" music etc, regardless of genre or sound.

What is this alien phrase I see? We recorded songs off the radio back in the day. Curse every radio host who talked over the songs!
Fun fact: my version of 99 Red Balloons still has the DJ's voice on it XD

... I still buy albums.. even vinyl records.
🤟❗

Nice! I bought three not too long ago for nostalgia's sake.

What's amusing to me was that the employees at Musimundo! were so taken aback by me doing so that they confessed that the "empty case" sticker they put on displays were fake and that it was only to discourage shoplifting -- every case had a CD in it and I could have swiped the entire shelf if I wanted to.

Oh, how times have changed.

I hate current discourse online in general

ESPECIALLY Twitter we need to take every Twitter user and lock them up in an Arkham City style mega death prison where they have to beat eachother up for power ong

Finding out that there are some ridiculously niche genres that people only listen to because they want to be special because they "listen to real music" is really lame. Metal Fans are the worst about this. Source: Metal Fan.
"omg you listen to rap? that's not real music, they don't even sing! now if you'll excuse me i'm off to listen to some gutterpsychocore GROWROWROROWORWORWORWORARGGGHHLL"

I honestly don´t care music is music and every one has their own taste.
I hate country, rnb, pop, k-pop. what ever the hell vocalid is im 100% sure it´s not fucking music, mumble rap which is not rap it´s just some idiots that decided I can´t sing so lets pretend I can by mumble some random shit.

I hate does kind of music and it´s gives me headache and hurts my ears and makes me angry. I don´t give a shit if it´s an art for or how was the instruments and what not. If if makes me wanna go deaf then it´s not my type of music.

It depends...

Chatting with other musicians about specific musical ideas is always a joy for me as a musician.

Outside of that, I don't really care at all about what other random people think when it comes to music. I don't care what you think is peak or mid. I'm too busy focusing on what I like, and discovering new things on my own musical journey.

I find that they tend to do that a lot less now. That and talking over the last bit of the song so you absolutely know the call letters and how much the station rocks. There must have been a quota of how many times a day the DJs were obligated to say it.
