Hi-Score Girl

Haven't seen it, but I've heard good things.

My only exposure to it is the ED song:

Yuka Nagase also did a cover several years back and I think it's better than the original:

I love the video game referenced in that series but I don't like rom-com (outside of Orange Road but then again OR is something I mostly like for the Economic Bubble era feeling rather than his shenanigans).

I used to watch that anime on Netflix in 2020!

Aren't there two seasons though? I haven't watched the rest in ages.

I forgot if there was a movie being the finale of the series.

a very good one, sad that many people didn't watch it because of the stupid " i don't watch if the anime is CGI" mindset.

Watched it during the pandemic when it came out, very good even tho i don't watch romantic comedy stuff but the references to video games and arcade games of the era was worth the watch.

I have both seasons plus the 3 OVA episodes on one of my Anime drive.

I just actually got sidetracked some time ago and never got around to watching them.
I mainly was curious due to all the retro game references, but again, I forgot to even watch it

Hell, I have a lot of Anime series i got and haven't even watch. Due to time

The issue is that this mindset still has a valid basis: Many 3D animes look worse than their 2D counterparts.

Especially with blatant examples such as comparing this

3D CGIs is trickier to make it looks good. A semi realistic romcom series may have a better chances passing well than a more realistic and action heavy one.

I read the manga before it came out on Netflix.

The manga really appealed to me since I was exposed to those games in it's original Japanese versions since that was what was sold here during those titles' heydey. And it brought back a lot of memories.

There's actually a second manga series called High Score Girl Dash. It focuses on Haruo's other not chosen girlfriend Hidaka who is now a middle school teacher. Some years already passed and Hidaka is using her love of fighting games to connect with her students. I haven't seen yet what happened to Haruo and Akira but Hidaka does meet up with Akira's mom. Best thing of all, apparently, this was set at the time when Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G (a.k.a Monster Hunter Freedom Unite) was popular in Japan and so the PSP gets some attention including some stories involving the MH games in the manga.

Watched almost all of the 1st season but had to drop.

I love fighting games and all but I couldn't stand the protagonist. Haruo is just insufferable as a protagonist and he soured the anime for me.

Also, I much prefer Hidaka over Oono and see Haruo completly ignore Hidaka really bugged me.

I watched this a few years ago, all I can say is it's an anime about video game references disguised as a romantic slice of life, not that the story is bad but you can tell it's an after thought just to shove as many video game references as posible.

Side note, suck it Di$ney, these guys had Guile and Zangief as main characters throught the entire series and you couldn't have them for more than two minutes on screen in Wreck-it Ralph, and you made Zangief a bad guy, why?

I sometimes get compared to her.
I disagree because I'm not that mean and violent. ::angrygenjin

It was amazing yet scary just how accurate they were to all the video games they showed off in the anime. You really could beat the general from Kaiser knuckle using the strategy in the anime. Even more mental is that the flick technique Oono used to do the 360 motion for the zangief SPD is A REAL THING!!!
In fact, all the tech and video game footage shown in the anime were specially recorded while being played by real players so everything you saw happen in the games could actually be done

Also, shoutouts to the tournament episode where they drew actual active SF players as opponents. If you look closely, you can see Fuudo and a few other pro players in there!

I dunno about a movie but there were two seasons and a three episodes OVA's in between.

I have watched the first 5 episodes but due to some work schedule I haven’t continued watching it and I’m planning to remedy that.

Hidaka was honestly the weakest part for me, putting aside her aggressive hypocrisy of shaming all men for enjoying video games yet she became a big gamer herself, her sexual advances made me quite uncomfortable, especially in the diner scene in S2, Square Enix are no strangers from depicting girls being extremely flirtatious and pushy but Hidaka being young yet extremely h0rni trying to pressure him into going to a love hotel was pushing it to me, but I had a friend who really liked her.

I prefered the manga because it includes far more games which would require to pay a licence to appear on TV.

The only entertaining thing in that show on both anime+manga are just the videogame references that faithfully depicted the 90s culture. That's it.
Everything else about it is just terrible. I had my fill of the references sated more with Lever Gacha Archive manga due to how short it was, and I'm more of a SNK guy than Capcom anyway.

The heavy capcom lean was just for the modern tv audiences, though they did do some SNK games like SamSho and even a deep cut like Kaiser Knuckle.

But it's impossible to move away from Capcom and streetfighter in particular. Hell, there's that anime in production that will be about Ojousama schoolgirls playing SF6!
Most mangas that depict fighting game culture and techniques usually use Tekken and thinly veiled references.

Any chance it's a spin off of Isekai Ojisan? As a Sonic fan I tried to like that anime, I could not finish it, is so bad.
