So i've been wondering do any of you guys play Sonic Battle, since most of you have mentioned sonic adventure several time so i just wonder if you guys have played this game.Tbh i personally love this game, a lil bit of hot takes tho, i prefer this than the usual Sonic game, i don't know i usually like platformer game but sonic really wasn't my cup of tea. But then i play this game which is actually a different genre entirely since it's a fighting game.

The thing i like about this game was how much this remind me of playing WWE espescially when playing with Emerl, combining moveset and even grinding for them was super fun, and just for information Gamma and Chaos moveset was the sooo freaking OP. Another thing i like was i just love how every single sonic cast just became a babysitter in this series. And the ending ohh boy that's super ironic but expected tho.

It was certainly an interesting idea. A console version would have been nice for local multiplayer.

I liked the move customization for the robot, but oh boy was it not a good idea to play this game with a keyboard. XD

I did! I remember I got the game in one of this 2 game cartridges with Sonic Advance 1.
I haven't revisited the game yet, but it is a fun one.
The major problem I remember is the beginning with Emerl. You don't get that many cards and the RNG for the cards is quite bad and slow to get a full set for any early battles the game is going to throw at you.
Other than that, I think it's a nice silly game with a very cheesy story. My favourite characters to play us were Shadow and Chaos.
Good luck getting all the cards and the secret cards that completely break Emerl, it is a long journey.

I remember getting it for my 11th birthday when I got my GBA, I liked it but I didn't get particularly far.
I'll have to revisit it some day, thankfully I don't believe any of my GBA save batteries died yet.

Well ngl the fight between knuckle and emerl was kinda hard lol. And also i just usually play with exploit which is spamming the jump roll attack.

This was a fun game. I got far into it but never beaten it, I should try to play it again sometime. The system for Emerl was very interesting. I liked that I could give them any moves that I got from playing and learning the battle system

I played it, while the 3D of the GBA is funky (as in it looks like a 2.5D games on the SNES) I did like the way levels are and how that rock paper scissors mechanic worked (you have 3 attack types and you choose which one you auto-guard from) which added some strategy.

Now I think that Power Stone is the objectively superior 4-player top down platformer fighting game it was quite the feat for a small handheld.

The story is decent (for a fighting game) and I even want to say that Shadow was written much better in this game than any of his post-SA2 iteration. Although you basically have to play this spinoff to better understand the events of Sonic Advance 3 (and why we got Gemerl as the secondary antagonist of the game). I'm still wondering why Shadow nor Rouge got added to SAd3 since they got their sprites from this game.

The biggest downside is that Emerl is very weak and you have to grind battle points to allow him to carry better moves. Also I hated the missions where you have to do two 10-points matches when one could've sufficed. I also didn't like the missions where you have to avoid attacks from three foes but thankfully they're rare.

Getting like 2 Battle Points per matches (and 10 per Chaos Emerald) was too little as a reward and the grinding got annoying after a while. Is there a cheat code or romhack that multiplies by 2, 3 or even 5 the BP bonus? I think the game's campaign would've been much smoother and I would replay it.

PS: I wasn't a big fan of seeing Amy Rose trying to lose weight through training to the point of exhaustion, this isn't healthy behaviour and she's too young to worry about that.

Still one of the best versions of GHZ we ever got in decades

Liked this one a lot back in the day. My only gripe was that we could not fight as Super Sonic.

Super Sonic in single player mode for fun would've been great but if he was available like in Sonic R that would've broken friendships lol.

Yes indeed. But I just wanted the novelty and possible spectacle of it all and as a Dragon Ball fan it would've been a treat to see Super Sonic throw hands haha

While I'm aware it's a spin-off I've always seen Super Sonic as an endgame reward or a post game bonus for the most skilled players around.

This is why you could theoretically get him as early as Emerald Hills Zone in Sonic 2 and why Tails couldn't transform was because he's too young and was always meant to be a second player character (as annoying as it was since he couldn't even fly until Sonic 3).

Sonic R had Super Sonic as the finale of the game because Radiant Emerald with him has all unlocked characters competing against him with a the main theme playing in the background.

Now if they added Super Shadow as an unlockable as well it could've been interesting to see a battle between two major opposite forces of the series (like Dragoon and Hydra in Kirby Air Ride/Riders).

Speaking of Riders I think Battle and that game had the flaws of being marketed as a party game when they're technically quite complex so that most people would either quit and tell it's not that good or continue while being confused about the mechanics.

Ohh yeah i kinda forgot how limited Emerl memories are.

I absolutely get that the single player story is supposed to be about him gaining power (since he's been dormant for decades if not centuries) yet I always felt like it was also a way to artificially pad out the game's length when it could've been a series of missions with some narration between them.

They even added several hub levels yet I also wouldn't have minded if they didn't have. It's mostly about "go there, fight a bunch of enemies, see some cutscenes and go somewhere else".

Is this me or visually and musically it's also the most Mega Man Battle Network game of the series (trading tile-based ARPG for a top down platform fighter)?

God damn. That little blue fucker really gets everything.

I mean shit Sega, do some other genres with Sonic. Yeah, yeah I know we have Sonic racing, and Olympic shit with Mario, etc.

How about Dr. Sonic? Use his speed to do a whole bunch of surgeries fast with time limits?

Secret Agent Sonic. Ninja Sonic. Doom Sonic. Zombie Fighter Sonic.

Anyone of those games would make like a billion dollars.

I have, but I only remember it for three things:

1) The absolutely amazing spritework.
2) The painfully terrible, droning mess they called a story.
3) The strong feeling of never wanting to play it more than once.

This... is like any game mascot, they often get spin offs.

Have you seen the ones Bomberman got or even Pac-Man? At least variety isn't what's lacking about them.

The story is decent imo, aside from the many filler moments I liked how Emerl evolved and how Shadow was in this entry compared to whatever Shadow the Hedgehog tried to tell.

I did back in 2004, I really liked the game at the time, it has surprisingly a very deep story for a fighting spinoff game on a handheld and even the ending hits hard, killer soundtrack with beautifully detailed sprite work.

This aside, this is another case of a game that goes for presentation over substance, no disrespect to the fans obviously as I was once a big apologist to the game, the voice acting, story, art style, and soundtrack are all top nudge, gameplay however is where it falls flat imo, it's a shallow experience especially once you realize all you gotta do is spam the special move (R bumper) and you will win almost every time, also the completion process is very tedious, unlocking all the moves is RNG and it takes forever.

I wanna love this game but honestly I don't play it that often, if I crave for a Sonic fighting game I just play Sonic The Fighters instead, it may lack in story but it makes up for it with the gameplay, plus another killer soundtrack (I actually prefer Sonic The Fighters soundtrack over Sonic Battle, but they are both great imo).

Weren't there a fanmade HD version with just the battle part?

There's also some sonic fighting games made by fans but they're not like The Fighters.

Not sure if you are referring to the same thing but there was a MUGEN mod that uses these sprites and turns it into a proper Sonic fighting game, Emerl was replaced with Gemerl from Sonic Advance 3 though, I might still have it on my hard drive, maybe I can share it in the repo later sometime.

Honestly the sprite work is the best part that came out if this game, excellent art.

yup, played it on my phone when i was a kid never got too far because after a few missions it got pretty repetitive but nowadays i see it as a pretty nice game.
