This was during the time when square started milking direct sequels,

tbf, I'm pretty sure this was the first direct sequel to a Final Fantasy game... Not an amazing game, but the battle system is pretty fun.

It's cringe and wack. The OST is also pretty try hard. This was during the time when square started milking direct sequels, when that wasn't a thing prior. Really the beginning of their downfall to producing slop for a couple of generations (they're still pretty much making slop)
