I remember this game getting praised actually for its simplicity in gameplay design.
I remember I had a second PS1 and I lent it to a friend who wasnt a gamer.
I lent him this game and Gran Turismo and he got hooked on both.
I also lent him the entire Neon Genesis Evangelion anime to watch since he never watched anime, and he loved it UNTIL its ending which he hated so much he wished I never lent him the anime, and he hasnt watched any anime since.
People said the same about Battle Arena Toshinden but the game looks so good... until I actually played it and yeah it sucked, idk this also looks interesting but I've not played it before.
BAT is an early 3D game. It was used to promote the launch of the original Playstation.
This was before Tekken 1 was confirmed to be ported over.
So BAT was used as a sort of well look what we have thing as the Sega Saturn had Virtua Fighter on its launch.
And the thing with BAT that made it stand out at the time was that it actually had 3D movement with the 3D dodge roll, as both Tekken 1 (and 2) and Virtua Fighter 1 (and 2), were 2.5D fighting games (a fighting game with 3D character models isolated in 2 dimensional movement).
Im assuming you didnt play BAT when it launched?
Otherwise yeah....it was more of a you had to be there at the time moment. Because certainly Tekken 1 and VF1 havent really aged gracefully all that much either when you think about it.
Did you ever play Battle Arena Toshinden for Game Boy?

Also for the people saying the undub is better...yeah subjective opinions aside: WARNING:
There is an unlockable 'ending' which is hilarious that has the entire cast conversing with each other audibly for an extended period of time while theres a splash group picture of them on screen.
If you have the undub you wont understand what theyre saying

not trying to crash pi-man's party, but i made a total decensor (age and encycliopedia included) weeks ago and an optional (mainly because i don't have the knowhow to add subtitles) undub.
Great game. Unique cast of characters going from schoolgirl with an spirit, tomboy who knows martial arts to Kamen Raider, 1000 years old loli magician, etc.
Yeah the one button gameplay is unique and fun.
its really good wdym?
I find it fun and enjoyable cuz its not all that complicated to play also its very newbie friendly with how they simplified the controls and simple gameplay mechanics.
you can combine both patches.
i made then separate for people who want to understand the story, myself included.
the game story works like a tv show, very amusing.

I did that too, but I would prefer an undub version of the game so I can understand the menu's. This here is one step closer. This game is hugely underrated.
This was my only fighting game as kiddo, it was janky then and is janky now, but certainly has it's charms with the TV-episode style stories and some banger tracks. Still play it every now and then.
