I'm thinking specifically of strategy RPGs where misunderstanding a game mechanic means hours spent playing were the education and you had to restart.

What was that game for you?
Did you use a GameShark or Cheat Code instead of restarting?

Oh.. once or twice...

Shin Megami Tensei: If
I was playing through all of the old school megami tensei games basically in a row and If.. was the last one. I was going for the best ending and had up to that point beaten every challenge through levelling and strategy, I had very good demons and my party was at least in the early 90s or whatever close to max was. I just could not beat him and I knew it would take grinding, and at that point the grind was fucking SLOW. So I cheated the last few levels and put my party up to 99 and stomped him so I could be done with it.

I had to restart Final Fantasy 10 the first time I played it because I saved right before a boss that I was way too underlevelled to beat and there was no way I could grind EXP. It was this bastard right here:

FFX-HD-00838-Airship-Evrae.webp

In my memory, I got the Luca Blight fight in Suikoden II without sharpening my weapons and could not return to an earlier point to do so, so I was stuck there. I wound up selling it before I ever went back and did another run

In my first five hours of Demon’s Souls I got destroyed by enemies I definitely wasn’t supposed to be fighting, and I somehow managed to ruin every World Tendency in the process. Another funny one was the first time I played the Ghost Rider game on PS2 — I didn’t even know you could level up. No idea how, but I still managed to beat the whole thing.

I will mention

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked

because I enjoy the game and feel a difficulty spike towards the end punished me.

I look at the time spent getting towards the end and not having the demons/skills to reach day 6 as a fun journey and my team died. That was a bad ending but I was satisfied with it. I'll take my written notes and begin a fresh play thru.

When I'm patrolling the Mojave? I hate them which is why tcl exists.

Saga Frontier 2, my 12 years old mind can't understand what I need to do to learn new skills, so most of the hard fights were impossible to win, I never end this game.
I want to play now but I have no time nor patience for a 90s jrpg right now.

No , I'm a professional gamer i can't play the incorrect way i only dabble in professional means

You see unlike you or the other peasants i engage with the game on an intellectual and sexual level of unmatched prowess , thus i read every single readable thing in the game and learn every tutorial just so that i forget 90% of what i learned in the first serious encounter and end up panicking in the process , this can be observed in Final Fantasy 8 first battle where i spent good 10 minutes checking every tutorial then on the first encounter i mistaken what quistis said thinking she meant press R1 i think to target enemies.....turns out she meant the other button now was it R1 or L1? It doesn't matter to a professional like me but i did miss out on the fact that the gunblade can "fire" bullets and deal more damage but my sheer professionalism beaten most of the game without even knowing that and without even realizing you can increase junction efficiency by increasing amount of junctioned spell! I totally didn't find out by chance you see i just like to make things harder on myself so i can boast about how marvelous and intelligent I'm on the internet.

I never softlocked myself in SaGa frontier because the game bullshits you and out of nowhere pulls out a monster swallowing the ship you're on and now you can't regain your WP/JP points because how are you supposed to know? Not to mention that i forgot not actually forgot i just pretend i forgot to seal at least 1 ability to keep all characters capable of learning a new skill , out of willpower alone i will conjure up a sanctuary stone that is basically the tent of SaGa frontier and regain my JP points so i could smack those stupid slimes with flash fire YEAAAAA BABY LIGHT POWERS GO BRRRRRR

My profound sense of playing games reached such heights i don't cower behind my artillery or anything long range in Sudden Strike you see what you feeble minded peasants think is "cowardly behavior" i call being methodical , i bomb everything to dust then move my manly men in to finish the job and no no they don't get shot by an obviously clearly a garrisoned enemy building because i already smell through the screen the stench of hostility coming from that building.

In conclusion I'm a PRO so no i never and i can't softlock myself.

yeah thats an annoying boss because there is nowhere to grind on the airship
im sure the game does that on purpose
he is still possible to beat with a weak party, trigger commands and alot of luck
for me the wall on FFX was Seymour Flux

recently i was playing soul reaver and hit a wall because i never triggered a cutscene by walking through a door, i took the long way around and walked through the same door from the other direction but it only triggers the cutscene walking through the door the right way ><

I remember thinking that the end boss of Blue's quest was some gimmick so I kept resetting and trying different things. Nope. What happens is totally supposed to happen. I did not know this for a few years until I had internet access at home. ::sailor-embarrassed

Its an issue of itself , SaGa frontier never tells you anything even what each stat does is never explained.

Thanks.

I was looking for words and forgot "softlock".

On the chart where a game's difficulty curve and the stats cross so it is impossible to advance.
So you ignored the entire comment and only focused on that word? I'm going find you and tickle you to death.

OK OK on a more serious note i thought you meant exploring game in a wrong way then pumping into inaccessible area the post said otherwise XD
