DOTA 2... a.k.a Not League of legends

I have like a burning desire to play Dota 2. I am the black sheep of my group for these but hear me out... i have been tired and burn out from LOL for years (since highschool lol) but had played other MOBAS like HoTS and Pokemon Unite... and had a lot of fun :3

Soo i have been thinking about playing DOTA 2 for a long time because now i am a Linux user and also because i always hear about it (except my "friends" irl)

Thoughts and advises pls

Play Turbo mode and mute anyone who gives you lip. Takes a long time to learn the game but not a long time to start enjoying it

I used to play a lot of Dota 2 in college (I logged over 500 hours in the game), though it's been about 10 years now since I really hardcore played it, so maybe it's changed a lot. I really liked it back then. Dota is the original MOBA. It's a much more hardcore/less casual experience than LOL. Be ready to talk a lot of shit though, the community was no joke, and trash talk was a very integral part of the game experience.

Think I tried playing Dota 2 once and wasn't for me. I did have fun with Dota Underlords which is one of those auto chess battlers. If I get the itch to play a MOBA these days I still end up going with HotS even with me being on Linux.

10 years ago I tried to play Dota 2 and I was legit scared about getting angry peruvians screaming at me for not knowing something or making some mistake so in the end I didnt get very far but I always thought it was kinda deep. like a sort of Team Fortress 2 but moba lol

So, how's your experience so far?

I've logged like 2300 hours of Dota 2, though I quit playing it like 6 years ago now maybe so I'm entirely out of the loop meta-wise. I'd say it's a little more serious in design than LoL, items are far more unique and there's a little more going on in it in terms of mechanics and interactions. The roles like support and carry are set pretty much in stone, but there's a little wiggle room you can pull based on team comps.

I'd say get some friends preferably to get into it with you as the game can be miserable solo, play some bot matches to get a feel for how the actual game controls, and really focus on getting last hits and denies in them. After, just take the plunge and try some casual matches and see what happens. People always say for newbies to 'start with support, it's the easiest!" as some catch all answer which I entirely disagree with; support can be hard as fuck, and forcing someone new into support can entirely ruin the game for them right off the get go. I say try characters you find interesting in the bot matches, try a bit of all three main positions (support, mid, carry) and see how you feel with each. The game has plenty of built-in item and character guides you can load in game, so stick with those at first.
