It is no secret that the mobile gaming industry is a vast landscape teeming with staggering genre variety. From gacha games, puzzle games, RPGs, action games, simulation games, and even strategy games. While many of these games are still around to this day (some have been around for about a decade or two like "Puyo Puyo Quest!!" and "Subway Surfers"), others have sadly been discontinued for various reasons; low playerbase, didn't generate enough money, a studio's closure, etc.

In this thread, I'd like to talk about two dead mobile games that I remember enjoying quite a bit. If you too have fond memories with a specific game or two, feel free to share your experience. I'd be happy to hear all about them.

Alright, so, the first game I'll be discussing is "Sailor Moon Drops".

This game was originally released in September 3rd, 2015 in Japan with a global release in the following year sometime in April.

It was a simple match 3 puzzle game in the vein of "Candy Crush" but with multiple playable characters – each with their own unique abilities – as well as items that affected the puzzle themselves. The game's story was a retelling of the classic 1992 "Sailor Moon" anime but split into 4 different arcs pertaining to a specific season of the anime. You started out with just Usagi, but unlocked the remaining Sailor Senshi across each arc.

The Sailor Senshi, as well as several other characters from the series were faithfully depicted in these adorable chibi renders and they nailed the over-the-top facial expressions that the series is known for.

In addition to the main campaign, there were also some challenge modes which had stipulations like clearing a stage with as few moves as possible or reaching a high enough score before time expired.

While "Sailor Moon Drops" wasn't exactly the most innovative puzzle game, it was at least charming enough to keep me engaged with it. Sadly, the servers were shut down in March of 2019. Nevertheless, I'm grateful that it, alongside the beat 'em up games for Super Famicom and Mega Drive, helped me get into the franchise back in middle school.

The second game I'd like to briefly discuss is "Alice Fiction".

It was released globally in July 27th, 2022 with several VTubers from Nijisanji and Hololive promoting it (I vividly remember watching Shu Yamino stream it).

Gameplay was an interesting mixture of an RPG and a match 3 puzzle game. That might sound odd at first, but it was executed surprisingly well. Matching 3 or more color panels in quick succession would cause a skill panel to appear. Breaking this panel would allow that character to use a special move called a "Crash Skill"; ranging from a multi-target attack, a powerful single target attack, stat modifiers, etc.

Another thing to note is that the panel board is carried with each passing turn – this made it so each turn was you setting up big combos and planning accordingly for the next turn.

The story was interesting, the character designs were fantastic, voice acting was top-notch, and the MUSIC... [Chef's Kiss]

Veneo Isrugi, ginkiha, Hiroyoshi Kato, etc, composed several bangers. Here's some 20 minute extensions of a few select songs straight from the official Alice Fiction YouTube channel:

This game had just about everything I could ask for out of a gacha game. Unfortunately, due to the game's pitifully low income, it ended service on September 30th of last year.

I'd love to see Alice Fiction return one way or another, though it's highly improbable that it would happen.

I played a good amount of Sailor Moon Drops. I think I got stuck on a stage for too long and uninstalled it, but I had a good time up to that point.

My list:
Crows x Worst V - I'd do a private server for this if I knew how
Crows x Worst Dynamite
Drift Spirits (the US version)
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure - Stardust Shooters
Shutokou Battle Xtreme

There was another one I can't place the name of, but I want to say it had "samurai" in the title, and the characters were all anime ladies, but it had a really striking art style for the time. Wish I could remember it. [edit - dug around in my JP account download history: Shinobi Nightmare is the game I was thinking of]

Mostly all the games that Square Enix had (FF All the Bravest, FF Brave Exvius, FF War of the Visions, Nier ReIncarnation)

I also played a lot of this Aggretsuko match-3 puzzle game called The Part-Timer Strikes Back

I used to play the Aggretsuko puzzle game too! Even remember getting it on launch via the playstore, really was bummed when I found out the game got shut down...

Another ill throw in is Pokemon Rumble Rush, really cool concept of a game, but died in a year.

Final one would be Miitomo, however that one does have private servers (and can be enjoyed today, give it a try if you like the Mii concept).

Not sure if any of these are actually fully dead, but I used to really enjoy playing rhythm games on mobile. Specifically Deemo, Cytus and Cytus 2 - before Rayark lost it with their approach to monetization.

There's something so damn tactile and satisfying to the touchscreen controls in those games that I even had fun when playing through songs I wouldn't otherwise have enjoyed.

That said, I was never anywhere near good enough to REALLY get into those kinds of games. There're some crazy people out there:
(to be clear, this is a comparatively easy song)

It was really pretty fun. Square Enix has wasted so much effort and assets on all these gachas, I swear. And many of their gameplay were actually pretty good (like the mentioned Dissidia).

We can only wish for some Offline Ver. treatments (like how it happened with Megaman X) or, yeah, the only way we are going to preserve all this is with memories and gameplay footage. Horribly depressing ngl.

Hellgate: London was pretty good for a mobile port.

There was also Mini DayZ, which is either dead or in death row.

And many, many Gameloft classics.

I really miss Gameloft FPS games, and I also miss the era when mobile games were actually made as real, standalone experiences, like Dead Space, which even had its own original mobile game.

I miss a whole bunch of gameloft games, fr!

I swear, Square Enix needs to port all of these gachas to console and call it a mobile bundle. I would get it immediately.

Dragalia Lost, but honestly I stopped playing before the shutdown for good reasons so I can't say it didn't have it coming. When I got into it I liked the story and the action RPG gameplay, but both atrophied. The gameplay went from having a mix of fighting mobs and bosses where you could use anyone to just being a boss battle time attack simulator where you need to adhere to the meta. They introduced a series of bosses with a gimmick basically forcing you to use new units by shutting down the kits of a sizable chunk of the roster.

Meanwhile the story ended up with some of the worst cases of trying to paint villains as sympathetic I've seen. The sudden shift from the player character's siblings being villains to actually really being good was insane. They tried to use affluenza as a tragic backstory for someone right after he demolished housing to build a statue of himself, nevermind the participation in genocide that suddenly none of the characters are bringing up even vaguely.

Also despite supposedly being about humans and dragons it quickly became clear the writers just didn't care about dragons unless they had marketable human forms. So the game basically ended up at odds with its own premise.

I miss pre Expert High Dragon Trials Dragalia Lost gameplay wise and story wise the changes in writing quality between main story and events makes it hard to pick a clear cut off point, but I stopped bothering with the main story around the world tree ascent and when side content was setting up the affluenza redemption arc.

I guess Simpsons Tapped Out is now the de-facto dead mobile game choice. Maybe Tiny Death Star for Windows Phone is another choice for me, but most mobile games I stopped playing ended up just becoming shit instead of actually ending service.

I guess Shadow Fight 2? It's not really dead per se, but I mean it's forgotten, I think, or at least not talked about as much. There is, however, one game that I absolutely adored back when I was a kid, and sadly, it got removed from the app store. That game is this:

Blitz Brigade.

Such a fun game to play, man, I remember just having a blast with my brothers and cousins with it. Sad that it got removed, honestly, it was really fun to play.

Also, I almost forgot, Shadowgun Deadzone

This was also a game I played a lot. It got rebranded I think, if I remember right. I did hear that you can technically still play it, as some people have created a port for it on pc with servers and all, but idk about that.

I already mentioned Terra Battle before (riperino rest in pepperino). I can bring up the Digimon mobile games (they were kinda shit though but linkz seemed like there was an attempt)

And IDOLM@STER don't get me started....the OG Side M and Growing Stars, completely gone (there's no mobile game for them now, I will not play enstars thank you very much.) Poplinks might've been dumb, but at least we got more interactions between the guys/gals.

Anyone remember Six Guns?
I loved that game because it was the first open world game in mobile that ever played, it was 2013 and seeing this was like ''HOLY MARY MOTHER OF JOSEPH YOU CAN RIDE IN THE HORSE AND MOVE AROUND THE MAP!''. But besides that the game was an absolute mess of a game, an absolute pay to win with a lot of bugs, and some scummy progression system like ''oh your weapon is a bit shitty to beat this mission why don't you pay money for this new shiny badass weapon that is alive'' the weapons are cool, but the majority costs money or paying sheriff medals or something, you cannot play the game because its delisted from the store.

this one
and this was my favorite at the time

Didn't realize that Cardinal Quest 2 is gone from the app store.
I already know Infinity blade also gone.
